The current superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, Dr. Daniel A. Domenech, took office in January, 1998. During his administration, inflation-adjusted spending per student has increased nearly 15 percent, from $8,572 to $9,801, not including debt service. School full-time staff has increased almost twice as fast as enrollment.

This is part of a long-term trend. For decades, school staff and inflation-adjusted spending have been growing faster than enrollment. Since 1975, inflation-adjusted spending per student has increased over 100 percent. Staff has increased almost four times faster than enrollment.

Nevertheless, in his cover letter for the schools' proposed FY2004 budget, Dr. Domenech stated that the budget has been cut and funding is not keeping up with enrollment.
