The data show taxes in 2000 were $14,807; in 1999, $14,554, a $253 increase.

  • Thus those near the mean Family Income amount made $361 more dollars, but 70 percent of that increased income- $253 - went to pay higher taxes.
  • Stated another way, government got 70% of the increased income, while the family was left with 30%.
    An interesting form of income redistribution.

    Head start services: $458,305 for 32 children
    Supervisors approved application for funding for $458,305 to provide head start services for 2002 for 32 additional children.

    Fairfax County property tax changes
    Fairfax County citizens' property tax assessments will rise about 11% in 2001. Meanwhile, the State Senate approved a permanent exemption on local property taxes for the National Wildlife Federation (worth about $302,000 annual tax relief) as requested by Fairfax County officials.

    Who benefits from prosperity?
    Over the past year, personal tax payments have increased 12.2%, or 4 times the inflation rate. Overall, national income is rising at 6%. inflation adjusted rate, but after tax personal income is growing only half as fast (3%).

  • personal income has risen 5.6%, income tax collections have grown 9.1%.
  • personal income has grown $ 2.8 trillion, but 18% went to Federal income taxes, 16% to state and local taxes, and 15% to other Federal taxes like payroll taxes.

    Local government burdens:
    The Virginia Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission. identified 391 [government] mandates, 290 of which were imposed by the state, 45 required by the federal government, and 56 imposed jointly by the state and federal governments. Further, 56 percent of these mandates were unfunded.
